Report for January 16th 2006. 1 year anniversary

Today January 16th 2006 marks the 1 year anniversary since Guyana experienced her worst man made disaster some 12 months ago. Even though the National Drainage and Irrigation Boards claims to have spent some 1.4 billion dollars to improve the drainage system on the east coast, there are still hundreds of drains and canals that are still clogged up, leading us to believe that we just might not have gotten worth for the kind of money spent.

The pictures don't lie, they show the state of neglect that so many of the canals on the east coast are presently in, the photos on this page are proof of that. You decide if the authorities are really working hard enough to prevent a reoccurrence of last year's flooding.

Conservancy issue: The Guyana National Drainage and Irrigation Board has opened the sluices at Maduri on the Mahaica river because of the seriously high water level in the East Coast water conservancy. If they don't release this water, the east coast water conservancy dam will surely break and that will result in serious flooding on the East Coast of Demerara. The ND&IB has also been blowing water at the Land of Canaan 5 doors sluice but the water in the east coast conservancy continues to raise dangerously high.

The lower parts of the Mahaicony area has been flooded for the last 5 weeks, now with the east coast conservancy water being released into the nearby Mahaica river, it means that this already flooded farming community will be in even deeper woes.

The following photos shows the miserable state of much of the canals on the lower east coast and parts of Georgetown.

They dug part of the canal further up but left this side clogged.

This is just after the service station located at Belair,ECD. A tractor was cutting the grass alongside the east coast highway just before we took this shot. The canal was left neglected. Taken from the famous "Conversation Tree" area. Someone cleared the piece at the side of their  lot, the rest is taken over with grass and weed. Light and Regent street, clogged drain equals  flooding A blocked overgrown alleyway on Light St,  just off of Regent St The other side of the alleyway Blocked alley, flooded yard. They were digging the Lama canal and building up the dam, it was raining just before I took this shot.
The Hymac in action on the Lama canal. We are not sure what this exercise is expected to achieve. This photo shows the section of the Lama canal dam where residents have fenced in a section of the reserve. Residents are saying that they got permission from the City Council to do so. The fence with the barbed wire belongs to businessman Peter Ramsaroop. The city council is saying that it is blocking the path of the excavator and wants to break it down. This tree is next to the canal and would have blocked the way of the excavator. Just beyond Ramsaroop's lot is another fence, this one belongs to the deputy British High Commissioner. The city council does not have a problem with this fence.
